Tim Holtz Sizzix Vault 2025 - Floristry Sidekick Side-Order Van Gogh Inspired 3 Sunflowers In A Vase

WOW, this blog is very dusty. Hello All! I hope this post finds each of you doing so well! I have not been creating much this year due to some medical issues, but I was fortunate enough to get to create a little something for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Spring Vault Launch. There are two parts to this launch with 5 sets out today, and the next part will come out on the 31st. The first five sets are the Vault Edge, Vault Industrial, Vault Atomic Retro, Vault Noteworthy, and the Sidekick Side-Order Vault Floristry, and I've used the last two to create another Van Gogh inspired Sunflowers piece, this time a 4x5 inch canvas, and using his 3 Sunflowers In A Vase as my guide. (If you missed my other two Van Gogh inspired pieces, click here for The 12 Sunflowers and here for The Poppies.) Enjoy!
I actually made two at the same time....one for Sizzix and one for home that I framed from a gorgeous little frame I found at an antique mall.

I used this image as my guide with the dies from the Side-Order Vault Floristry to create both canvases much the same as I did the others.

(Note: It's good to print off the Van Gogh 3 Sunflowers In A Vase for reference while you work, or have the pics on your phone to use for detail work.) Take a 4x5 inch canvas (I did 2, a chunky and a panel.) and using a palette knife, apply a thin layer of Opaque Distress Texture Paste from Tim and Ranger,  to the whole canvas dividing up wall (vertical lined pattern) and where the table part (about 1 inch wide horizontal line pattern) will be. Let the canvas dry about an hour.

Paint over the top textured area with Broken China Distress Paint. While the paint is still wet add a bit of Picket Fence Distress Paint here and there vertically (using the pic as your guide) creating stripes of color while blending them for a soft striated look. Using Scorched Timber Distress Paint, add a line of paint where the blue ends, and then dashes of Vintage Photo, Squeezed Lemonade, Mustard Seed, and Rusty Hinge filling in the whole bottom area, again using the pic as your guide. Let the canvas dry.

Free hand cut the vase (about 1.5 inches tall) from scrap cardstock and add two sided tape to the back. Using the Distress Paints, Broken China, Picket Fence, Scorched Timber, Twisted Citron, and Peeled Paint, try to recreate the look of the vase in the pic. Begin die cutting the leaves and stems using scrap green cardstock backed with two sided tape, from the Floristry Side Order. Use either Twisted Citron, Peeled Paint, or Scorched Timber to paint in the leaves and stems, following the pic.

Emboss the vase with the Honeycomb looking Texture Fade, and then use a bit of Scorched Timber around the edges of the vase. When dry, apply Collage Medium to the canvas where the vase will go, remove the backing and stick it on, coating it with Collage Medium as you go. When dry, play with the arrangement of leaves and stems to see where they will go, and begin to stick them on with the Collage Medium as well.

Add two sided tape to the back of light and dark yellow cardstock scrap, and begin die cutting all the flower petals and centers using the Floristry Side-Order, as well as the circle from Vault Noteworthy for a few more round center pieces. Begin to layer the petals and centers by removing the backing and sticking them together until you have all three flowers with a look similar to the pic.

Adhere the flowers on covered them with Collage Medium. When dry, use the paints to add more detail all the parts.

Finish off the canvas by adding dots of Ranger Liquid Pearls in Dark Chocolate, Key Lime, and Wendy Vecchi's Sunflower, and Orange Blossom to the centers of the flowers. Let dry, and then coat the whole canvas with more Collage Medium (Crazing if you have it.).

Distress Embossing Glaze Blossoms in a Talavera Planter Mixed Media Canvas

Hello Everyone! It's been awhile since I've been here and it's a little dusty. Today I have exciting news...Tim Holtz and Ranger have just added 12 more colors to the Distress Embossing Glazes line, many that we were needing so much! I hope you are watching Tim's Live today so you can see some fabulous ways to use the Glazes, if not be sure to watch the replay. I've used six of the colors on this Mixed Media 8x10 inch canvas to create the Talavera Pottery Planter and centers of all the flowers. I've collected Mexican Talavera Pottery for years and try hard to find the ones that are signed by the Artists. With all the new colors of Glazes it was easy to create a pot that has my favorite colors, all the oranges and blues. The pot below is my favorite one, so I tried to create this one very similar to it. The paneling  as well as decking on the canvas also matches perfectly with the real house, and that is because I used the same colors of inks and paints as the new Glazes, so this new collection was perfect for this project. Thanks so much Tim and Ranger for bringing forth the new colors!

I used Distress White Heavystock and die cut the largest Oval and biggest Scallop from the Stitched Ovals Thinlits from Sizzix. I placed the Oval under the Flames Layering Stencil from Stamper's Anonymous centering it for the part of the design I wanted and taped the stencil down. Starting with Abandoned Coral Distress Ink, I inked in the top and bottom heart shape using a Detail Ink Blending Tool as it's the only tool I have to get into those tiny parts of the stencil, then I removed the oval from under the stencil and immediately poured Abandoned Coral Distress Embossing Glaze over and then heat set it with the heat tool. I repeated this again with Spiced Marmalade next, then Squeezed Lemonade,  then Mermaid Lagoon, then Chipped Sapphire, and finally Crushed Olive last as there was more to ink with the green. I used a small paint brush to brush off any powder that got on the areas where I didn't want it. For the Scallop I only inked in the half circle areas using Chipped Sapphire Ink and Glaze.

I snipped off a segment of three Scallops for the top of the pot, two for the bottom, and one each for the handles. I used a hole punch to punch off the center of the Scallop for the handles. Then using Collage Medium, I adhered the pieces onto the pot. To give the pot an even more Talavera Pottery look I used a dark blue permanent pen and traced around each part and also added some lines and circle dots. I set this aside for now.

Using more White Heavystock with two sided tape on the back (I used two sided tape on all the die cuts), I die cut three of the flower parts (orange ones on lower left corner of the die picture) from the Mini Brushstroke Flowers along with three each of the leaves. I also die cut three of the top flower part from the Blossom Thinlits, three each of the leaves parts, and three each of the centers. I used Ivory Heavystock to die cut three of the base parts from Blossom, and Watercolor Cardstock for the second middle part of the Blossom. Taking only the three bottom center parts from Blossom, I inked over them with Orange Marmalade Distress Ink and then poured the same Embossing Glaze over and heat set. For the top center part I inked them with Squeezed Lemonade and matching Glaze. I did the same for the center rings of the Mini Brushstroke Flowers. At this point I wasn't sure about my flower colors so I set them all aside for a bit to concentrate on the canvas.

Taking an 8x10 inch canvas panel and the Stripes Layering Stencil with Crackle Texture Paste, I stenciled in the top areas of the canvas about two inches up from the bottom, letting the areas dry a bit, and then continuing in the pattern until the whole top area was striped. When dry, I painted in the area with Chipped Sapphire Distress Paint, and then added Stormy Sky paint to the center area and blended it out to create a halo of color.

Taking a 2 x 8 inch piece of Woodgrain Cardstock, I inked over it with Wild Honey Archival Ink, pressing the ink into all the debossed areas, and then ran the pad of Frayed Burlap Archival over the raised areas. I trimmed this into three graduated widths, and then inked the edges heavily with the Frayed Burlap. I adhered these onto the bottom of the canvas using Crazing Collage Medium and also covered the whole rest of the canvas with it for a beautiful textured sheen. Now I had the outside walls and decking of my house with all the Talavera Pottery that I collect, and it was a perfect match with the real house.

I decided on orange for the Mini Flowers, so I inked over the petals of all of them using Spiced Marmalade Archival Ink, and inked the centers with Vintage Photo. Then I adhered all the parts together. Using Wild Honey Distress Paint I added stripes to the petals, and dots to the centers with Walnut Stain Distress Paint. I brought the pot onto the canvas to figure out sizing and position of everything, and then cut stems from White Heavystock for the three Mini groupings of flowers and cut the ends into strips for each flower stem, and two thicker for the large Blossoms that I know would be seen. I painted the stems and base leaves with Crushed Olive Distress Paint, and inked in the other parts of the leaves with Crushed Olive Archival Ink. Even though it's the same color, there still is slight difference on the leaf parts to give the look of texture. I adhered the stems into place first with the Crazing Collage Medium, added the pot, and then added the Mini Brushstroke Flowers and leaves, coating all in the medium.

For the large Blossoms, I adhered the three petal parts together and the centers as well, but I did not add the centers on yet. Taking Antique Linen Distress Paint, I randomly painted in the Ivory areas in the center and into the open parts on the petals. Then I used Picket Fence to paint in a few stripes on the top petals for some texture. I adhered the centers into place, and used the Walnut Stain Distress Paint to add tiny dots on and around the centers. I also created a petal from the negative die cut pieces. I figured out the placement of the flowers and leaves and then adhered the leaves on covering them with the Crazing, then I added the Blossoms. I signed the canvas and then coated the whole thing again with the Crazing.

Stamper's Anonymous Summer 2022 - Noteworthy Waterfall with Bubbles Mixed Media Small Canvas Pouch

Hello again this week, and welcome to the last project tutorial from the Tim Holtz Stamper's Anonymous Summer release...yes, the one most of you have been waiting for. LOL!!! I have had so many messages and emails on this project. I never would have dreamed it, because when I designed and made this, I saw a waterfall of Noteworthy words into a rainbow of Bubbles, but half my family and several of you, saw flowers and there are no flowers on this. So to me, I just didn't do a good enough job of conveying that on this pouch. Or maybe it was just that you all liked the stamping on canvas idea. Who knows, but I can assure you that stamping on canvas is easy peasy...ONLY IF you use a stamp platform or a clear stamping block to repeat the stamping, as material soaks up the ink or paint fast, and to get the best image you need to repeat...and even heat emboss like I did. Enjoy the tut! And truly thank you so much for all the kind words!!!

(Note: Since you are working on a canvas bag with a zipper, it's best to turn the bag upside down with the zipper at the bottom of the platform so it closes a little better than the zipper at the top.) Place all the sentiments you want to use from the Noteworthy Stamp Set, on the large stamp platform going vertically (remember zipper at bottom so the words reading top to bottom) with a clear placement where they will start, and then staggering the words. Stamp the sentiments on a blank sheet of paper using any dark ink (I used Black Soot Archival.), and then cut around them where the bottom of the bag will be so you get a clear outline of the bottom of the waterfall, as this will be used as a guide and as a mask for later. Leave the words in the platform for later.

Using the stamped paper as your stencil, lay the paper on top of the canvas bag, with the top lining up with the zipper, and trace around the bottom with a pencil so you know where the water will stop.

(Note: Because of the color of the zipper being canvas colored, I wanted it to be blue, but I didn't want to paint it and risk coloring the zipper pull, so I thought Spray Stain would be best as it won't stick to the zipper, but will color the canvas.) Lightly mist the top of the canvas bag (the zipper area part) with water on both sides so that the stain will color evenly and be more absorbent. Spray the top of the bag with Prize Ribbon Distress Spray Stain from Ranger on both sides, and let dry.

Cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside the bag (6 x 8.5 inches) to give it nice rigidity while painting, and to protect the paint from bleeding through to the opposite side. Paint the open top area of the bag with Prize Ribbon Distress Paint and medium paint brush, going down to the drawn line. You can use a bit of water from a mister to add to the paint to extend it, but make sure there is no canvas color showing under the paint. Let dry, and then do the other side.

Using Peacock Feathers Distress Paint that has been watered down a tiny bit, add vertical lines of paint randomly from the top of the bag by the zipper to the drawn line, creating striations of color like in a waterfall. Let dry, and then do the same on the back of the bag.

Pounce over the bag with the Anti-Static Pouch to prevent the powder from sticking, and then place the bag (zipper side down and zipped up) into the large stamp platform, and stamp the words on the blue area of the bag using Glacier White Pigment Ink. (Note: Make sure your Pigment Ink pad is nice and wet with the white ink...if not reink before stamping the words.). It may take a few stampings before your words are nice and crisp and white. Once nice and crisp, immediately pour Clear Embossing Powder over the words (over a blank sheet of paper for easier clean up) and then pour off, unzip the zipper,  and heat emboss the words using a heat tool while sticking your hand inside the bag to open it up to allow the air to flow through. The heat tool might make the canvas bag smoke in the corner areas, but it won't last long or catch on fire (unless you are not moving the heat tool), as the powder heats and sets quickly...just look for it to get shiny and then move the tool to a new area. Let cool.

Gather up colorful Distress Paints. I used Prize Ribbon, Peacock Feathers, Villainous Potion, Picked Raspberry, Kitsch Flamingo, Crackling Campfire, Saltwater Taffy, Fossilized Amber, Cracked Pistachio, and Salvaged Patina. Once color at a time, paint in various sizes of circles randomly over the bottom area (below the water) of the bag, covering the side and bottom seams as well, until you've done all the colors about five or more times, using a small detail paint brush. (Note: Make sure to shake the paints before each use.)

After using all the paints and having some more open areas, I decided to add in Salty Ocean and Dusty Concord since they seemed like good bubble colors, to fill in the rest of the spaces. Let this side dry well, and then do the same to the other side of the bag.

Place the stamped paper (the mask) over the top area of the bag and secure down with tape on the glass mat. Take the Bubbles large background stamp on the stamping block it came with, and BEFORE inking it, play with it to figure out the best way and image placement to stamp as much of the bottom area as you can. Once you figure that out, make sure your ink pad is nice and juicy as you only get to stamp once (since you are not using a platform, unless you are good enough to realign and stamp again) and ink over it with Glacier White Pigment Ink. Stamp the Bubbles along the bottom of the bag, remove the mask, and then immediately pour the Clear Powder over. Remove the excess and heat emboss. Place the mask back on and restamp the area that needs the image, pour powder and heat set. Use a White Gelly Roll Pen to add dots above the Bubbles to look like splashes of water. You can also use the pen to fix any areas that did not emboss well if you are steady handed enough.

Using Picket Fence Distress Paint and a medium brush, add faint lines of white paint to the top waterfall area for a little more variegation between the wording. Let dry. Cut Velvet Trim ribbon to about 10 inches, and fold in half. Thread through hole in zipper pull and secure with a knot to aid in opening the zipper or to wrap around the wrist.
