Love Notes Distress Mixed Media Valentine Cards

Hello Everyone! Are you watching the Tim Holtz Distress Watercolor Pencil LIVE right now?!! I am, and will surely watch the replay. I always learn so much more from watching the demo. I decided to make some Valentine Cards using the new stamp set Love Notes from Tim and Stamper's Anonymous in all Mixed Media style with a bunch of Ranger Tim Distress goodies, and finished them off with the ever important new Distress Watercolor Pencils as the icing on the Love Cake! Despite all the mediums used, without the Pencils these Valentine's would just be blah...you'll see what I mean below in the step outs. AND...I discovered how good the Pencils are with my favorite substrate Specialty Stamping Paper. Enjoy, and Happy Love Day to all of you!

I intended to make a 12 x 12" masterboard at first, but I figured I could only make twelve 3 x 4" cards, so I opted for two sheets of 8.5 x 11" Specialty Stamping Paper to yield 18 cards (six of which are smaller in size due to me using all that I could). It can handle all the wet and heat you can pretty much give it and the stamping always looks so nice on it. I began by lightly misting both sheets with water and then alternating colors of Distress Spray Stain in Tattered Rose and Saltwater Taffy. Then I splatter on Lumberjack Plaid. I let this all dry naturally for a bit.

I cut the two sheets into twelve 3 x 4" pieces and six 3 x 3". Placing the largest solid heart from the Love Notes set first into the middle of a card, I stamped with the new Scorched Timber Distress Ink on a stamp platform, and added half hearts on the sides, doing two cards at a time so that one half of a heart stamped on one and the other heart on the another to save time. (NOTE: Kept in mind that ink stays wet on SSP for a while, so let these dry overnight or hit them with a heat tool, and be careful touching them before.) Then I stamped the two little solid hearts using Picked Raspberry and Dusty Concord Distress Archival Ink. I also stamped the little XO in the Scorched Timber.

(I pounced over all the cards with an Anti-Static Pouch before embossing so that none of the powder would stick where I didn't want it. ) I stamped the large heart outline image in the Scorched Timber and poured Gold Embossing Powder over and heat embossed. Then I did the sentiment the same.

The card bases I used precut and folded red cards and envelopes from the craft store that I had on hand in 4 x 5.5" size. I mounted Red Kraftstock to the front, inked with Scorched Timber. Then I cut Gold Kraftstock to go on next, but since the two card sizes are obviously different I tried to bridge the gap with Dina Wakley Washi Tape. I added one strip to the bottom of the gold for the long cards of the multi color dotted one, and two strips of the same for the 6 shorter ones. Then on the 6 shorter I cut a heart from the another design and added those. I cut brown Kraftstock that each card front will be mounted to. I inked the edges of everything in Scorched Timber as well. Using a Marvy Liquid Gold Fine Tip Marker, I outlined all the other hearts as well.

Here is where the Distress Watercolor Pencils come into the mix. If you look at the left side of this picture, the two cards along the left side do not have colored in hearts. Although nice, they are boring and really needed color. I used Festive Berries and Lumberjack Plaid Distress Watercolor Pencils only to color in the hearts as well as shade around the large heart using a Detail Waterbrush. Then I flicked some of the wet red color over for some dots of color. See close ups below to see the difference the Pencils made. Also, I discovered that the Pencils just glide over the SSP and absorb so well. You get a gorgeous soft suede matte look and I love that. I cannot think of any other Distress medium that would have worked as well as these Pencils to color in the hearts and over the Distress Ink on the middle large heart.

Left side no Distress Watercolor Pencils and the right side colored and flicked on. So much better, right?!!

And just to show you more....the left side large heart does not have the filled in red color or flicks of color and the right side does. A tremendous difference in appearance to me, with just two colors of Pencils!

Distress Embossing Glaze Blossoms in a Talavera Planter Mixed Media Canvas

Hello Everyone! It's been awhile since I've been here and it's a little dusty. Today I have exciting news...Tim Holtz and Ranger have just added 12 more colors to the Distress Embossing Glazes line, many that we were needing so much! I hope you are watching Tim's Live today so you can see some fabulous ways to use the Glazes, if not be sure to watch the replay. I've used six of the colors on this Mixed Media 8x10 inch canvas to create the Talavera Pottery Planter and centers of all the flowers. I've collected Mexican Talavera Pottery for years and try hard to find the ones that are signed by the Artists. With all the new colors of Glazes it was easy to create a pot that has my favorite colors, all the oranges and blues. The pot below is my favorite one, so I tried to create this one very similar to it. The paneling  as well as decking on the canvas also matches perfectly with the real house, and that is because I used the same colors of inks and paints as the new Glazes, so this new collection was perfect for this project. Thanks so much Tim and Ranger for bringing forth the new colors!

I used Distress White Heavystock and die cut the largest Oval and biggest Scallop from the Stitched Ovals Thinlits from Sizzix. I placed the Oval under the Flames Layering Stencil from Stamper's Anonymous centering it for the part of the design I wanted and taped the stencil down. Starting with Abandoned Coral Distress Ink, I inked in the top and bottom heart shape using a Detail Ink Blending Tool as it's the only tool I have to get into those tiny parts of the stencil, then I removed the oval from under the stencil and immediately poured Abandoned Coral Distress Embossing Glaze over and then heat set it with the heat tool. I repeated this again with Spiced Marmalade next, then Squeezed Lemonade,  then Mermaid Lagoon, then Chipped Sapphire, and finally Crushed Olive last as there was more to ink with the green. I used a small paint brush to brush off any powder that got on the areas where I didn't want it. For the Scallop I only inked in the half circle areas using Chipped Sapphire Ink and Glaze.

I snipped off a segment of three Scallops for the top of the pot, two for the bottom, and one each for the handles. I used a hole punch to punch off the center of the Scallop for the handles. Then using Collage Medium, I adhered the pieces onto the pot. To give the pot an even more Talavera Pottery look I used a dark blue permanent pen and traced around each part and also added some lines and circle dots. I set this aside for now.

Using more White Heavystock with two sided tape on the back (I used two sided tape on all the die cuts), I die cut three of the flower parts (orange ones on lower left corner of the die picture) from the Mini Brushstroke Flowers along with three each of the leaves. I also die cut three of the top flower part from the Blossom Thinlits, three each of the leaves parts, and three each of the centers. I used Ivory Heavystock to die cut three of the base parts from Blossom, and Watercolor Cardstock for the second middle part of the Blossom. Taking only the three bottom center parts from Blossom, I inked over them with Orange Marmalade Distress Ink and then poured the same Embossing Glaze over and heat set. For the top center part I inked them with Squeezed Lemonade and matching Glaze. I did the same for the center rings of the Mini Brushstroke Flowers. At this point I wasn't sure about my flower colors so I set them all aside for a bit to concentrate on the canvas.

Taking an 8x10 inch canvas panel and the Stripes Layering Stencil with Crackle Texture Paste, I stenciled in the top areas of the canvas about two inches up from the bottom, letting the areas dry a bit, and then continuing in the pattern until the whole top area was striped. When dry, I painted in the area with Chipped Sapphire Distress Paint, and then added Stormy Sky paint to the center area and blended it out to create a halo of color.

Taking a 2 x 8 inch piece of Woodgrain Cardstock, I inked over it with Wild Honey Archival Ink, pressing the ink into all the debossed areas, and then ran the pad of Frayed Burlap Archival over the raised areas. I trimmed this into three graduated widths, and then inked the edges heavily with the Frayed Burlap. I adhered these onto the bottom of the canvas using Crazing Collage Medium and also covered the whole rest of the canvas with it for a beautiful textured sheen. Now I had the outside walls and decking of my house with all the Talavera Pottery that I collect, and it was a perfect match with the real house.

I decided on orange for the Mini Flowers, so I inked over the petals of all of them using Spiced Marmalade Archival Ink, and inked the centers with Vintage Photo. Then I adhered all the parts together. Using Wild Honey Distress Paint I added stripes to the petals, and dots to the centers with Walnut Stain Distress Paint. I brought the pot onto the canvas to figure out sizing and position of everything, and then cut stems from White Heavystock for the three Mini groupings of flowers and cut the ends into strips for each flower stem, and two thicker for the large Blossoms that I know would be seen. I painted the stems and base leaves with Crushed Olive Distress Paint, and inked in the other parts of the leaves with Crushed Olive Archival Ink. Even though it's the same color, there still is slight difference on the leaf parts to give the look of texture. I adhered the stems into place first with the Crazing Collage Medium, added the pot, and then added the Mini Brushstroke Flowers and leaves, coating all in the medium.

For the large Blossoms, I adhered the three petal parts together and the centers as well, but I did not add the centers on yet. Taking Antique Linen Distress Paint, I randomly painted in the Ivory areas in the center and into the open parts on the petals. Then I used Picket Fence to paint in a few stripes on the top petals for some texture. I adhered the centers into place, and used the Walnut Stain Distress Paint to add tiny dots on and around the centers. I also created a petal from the negative die cut pieces. I figured out the placement of the flowers and leaves and then adhered the leaves on covering them with the Crazing, then I added the Blossoms. I signed the canvas and then coated the whole thing again with the Crazing.

Lost Shadow Distress To The Moon Valentine Card

How about that new Distress color?!! Talk about the most versatile neutral ever! Lost Shadow from Tim Holtz and Ranger is really unique as it's not too dark, not too light, goes with every single color in the line, AND can hold it's own all by itself. I never thought I could love a gray shade so much, but I do. Here on this very simple Valentine, which took me about 20 minutes to make from start to finish, I used Lost Shadow not only as a gray (for the moon) but also in place of my usual white that I would normally do on a night sky card. There is no other color I could do that with. Typically when I create a moon, I use a combination of Pumice Stone, Hickory Smoke, and Antique Linen to achieve the look I like, but with Lost Shadow it was all I needed. Just perfect! And then it's light enough to create stars with. Seriously, just perfect. Enjoy this simple simple tut and card...that can really be an all occasion card and not just a Valentine.

For this 4x5.5 inch card, I cut and folded a Kraft Cardstock base, inked the edges in Gathered Twigs Distress Ink, and then added a White Heavystock mat. I used the medium Sized Circles Movers and Shapers from Sizzix, to cut a White Heavystock piece for the moon. The medium Moon Mask from Stamper's Anonymous is a great match for this size of circle. I also cut the Black Kraftstock as a front for the card just slightly smaller than the white mat.

First, I inked over the whole circle with Lost Shadow Distress Ink and an Ink Blending Tool. Then I laid the open mask over the circle and inked in the parts with Lost Shadow Distress Oxide. Taking the Black Kraftstock, I placed the solid mask in the center upper portion of the black, and inked around it with the Oxide. Yes, it shows up wonderfully. Then I lightly misted both pieces with water to get some mottling going.

I adhered the moon in place, and then added the sentiment to the platform, covering the 'o' from the 'love' with a sticky note so it wouldn't get stamped. I inked it up and removed the sticky note, and stamped the sentiment from the Life Quotes Stamp Set over it and the bottom of the card front with the Lost Shadow Oxide and immediately poured the matching Embossing Glaze over. I heat set the glaze. Look how wonderfully it shows up on the black. No need for white.

I placed the solid moon mask over the moon to cover it up and added sticky note over the sentiment to cover it up, and mixed a tiny bit of water with a tiny bit of Lost Shadow Distress Paint, and then used the Splatter Brush to add drops of paint over the rest of the black card for a starry look. Again, no need for white.

I die cut a piece of White Heavystock using one of the icing die pieces from the Colorize True Love Thinlits and die cut the part I wanted. I inked over the hearts I needed with Lumberjack Plaid Distress Ink and a Detail Blending Tool, and added the open heart to the place where the 'o' would go, and added a few more tiny hearts to the card. Then I added the card front onto the base card. This card was so super simple and so so fast to put together, and has a big impact I think.
