Oh Deer Mixed Media Acrylic Painting

Hello crafters and painters! Today, I have a painting I made for my oldest son for Christmas. I usually don't show a lot of my paintings, but he insisted that I do, so here I am. His bedroom was stuck in little boy mode still, so I've been working on it to make it more manly. He has become quite the deer hunter with one every year...we eat all the meat animal lovers, please don't be offended...so I went with the deer theme. The canvas is huge, 2.5x5.5 feet, and had another painting underneath that matched his old comforter in a sports theme, so I covered it in white gesso and began, using all the wonderful products and acrylics from Dina Wakley's Media line from Ranger. No step out photos...I got too carried away, but here are some shots of the finished painting.
The painting looks small on the wall, but the bed is queen size so that gives you an idea.
I free form cut strips of dictionary pages to create the head, and collage them on, then came the paint. I didn't use a whole lot of colors, but I mixed several to create new colors. I just love his eyes.
Here you can see lots of metallics coming out. I used lots of Gilt Paint.
You can see some of the newsprint on the antlers here that wasn't as covered up.
Thanks for looking and commenting. I'll be back again shortly with ornaments. Until then, happy shopping and wrapping!

I hope your hands get creatively dirty soon!

  2. I love, love, love this! The background is scrumptious. You are so brave to paint a face! That takes real skill and real courage. My goal for 2017 is to make time to play with water color. I know this is acrylic, but it's very inspiring to me all the same. Hugs, Beautiful Soul!

  6. This is amazing! I love the color palette. I'm vegetarian myself but I respect people who use all the meat caught. It's good and responsible to know where your food comes from. Beautiful tribute to the animal that provided for you and your family. I also love the antlers placed around it.

  7. Wow, what a wonderful piece of art. It is very nice that your son likes your work, I mean, why wouldn't he. What I mean is sometimes teenagers can be "difficult" so it pleases me that you don't have to suffer difficulties. :o)
